ScanWRX exists because the tools for this job either cost more than a small firm can justify, or produce answers you cannot defend when a client asks how you know.
Why we built it
The job that produced ScanWRX is an ordinary one: walk into a building you have never visited, find out what is on the network, work out what each thing is, and leave behind a document somebody else can use.
The tools available fell into two camps. The enterprise platforms did the job well and wanted an annual commitment that no small service firm can justify for occasional site surveys. The free tools scanned quickly and then confidently told you a device was a model it had guessed from a MAC prefix — which is fine until you put it in a report with your name on it and someone checks.
What was missing was in between: something quick, something that runs on the laptop you were handed, and something whose conclusions you can defend.
The principle it is built on
That principle is not a slogan; it is enforced in the code. The rule engine that matches evidence to manufacturers and categories has no field for a model number — not a check that refuses to fill one in, but nowhere to put one. A model can only come from a device’s own report about itself.
The same thinking runs through the rest. Inference is capped below “confirmed” no matter how many signals agree. Randomised hardware addresses are never attributed to a manufacturer. A check that could not run is reported as skipped rather than passing. When Find Device catches two disconnections at once, it names neither and shows you both.
Choices we made on purpose
- It never needs administrator. No driver, no packet capture, no elevation. A tool that needs full control of a machine to look at a network is a tool that can do anything at all to that machine.
- It opens no inbound port. Including for sign-in — which is why activation uses a code you type rather than the loopback callback almost every other desktop application uses.
- It never guesses a credential. No default SNMP community strings, no vendor default lists. That is credential guessing, and it is not something a tool on your laptop should do on a client’s network.
- Your scans never leave your machine. The networks you scan belong to your clients. Uploading them would put you in breach of agreements you signed.
- The free tier is a real tool. Not a demo with the useful parts removed. If it covers what you need, use it forever and never create an account.
- We wrote the scanning engine. ScanWRX does not wrap Nmap. That keeps it out of GPL territory, out of antivirus arguments, and means the behaviour is ours to fix rather than ours to work around.
